The mainstream media has declared former vice president Joe Biden as the 2020 president-elect, but the news does not make any candidate the winner. Instead, the United States Federal Election Commission is responsible for tallying presidential votes by state and reporting the final result. Other than such, the entire process also takes months, all the way until inauguration day on January 20, 2021.
First, the Federal Election Commission has declared that it is too early to call a winner, and that many states have not reported the total votes. The commission releases a bi-annual report on Senate, House, and Presidential elections, which includes official declarations of winners, and this is the proof that an individual needs in order to declare themselves victorious.
The latest presidential election of 2016 between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, for example, can be found within the Election Commission's report 'Federal Elections 2016,' where Trump is declared the winner, along with the electoral college and popular vote counts. Aside from the official report, the president-elect is also stated on their official website (https://www.fec.gov/). As of now however, it reports that the total votes have not yet been counted, disproving the media's declaration.
Beyond that however, the media has also simply projected the electoral votes that each presidential candidate will receive, when in reality, the electors have yet to cast their ballots. The process of electoral college voting actually takes place in December, and as history has shown, projections are not always correct.
Furthermore, the Senate and House of Representatives both hold the right to raise objections and undergo other processes regarding election results. The president-elect is then formally declared by Congress and inaugurated in January.
The presidential election is a long and complicated process, and the media only plays an extremely small role. As of now, neither incumbent President Trump nor former vice president Joe Biden have won the White House.
